Every month we have a topic to talk about with the volunteers to better serve the students who come to ASAP for help.
In October the topic was about personal statements.
Key takeaways are UC admissions readers only spend 8 minutes reading an application, so it is important to to make a personal statement be clear and to the point. Begin an essay with WHAT the student experienced to WHY that experience is important to them. Avoid putting in philosophical questions or definitions of words in the beginning of your essay.
In December the topic was about scholarships and summer research
Key takeaways for scholarships are that students can use their personal statements from their UC or private schools apps for the questions scholarships ask. Students should ask recommenders a month before the scholarship app is due.
Key takeaways for summer programs is students can do up to 2 programs, One academic plus one sport or two sports programs during the summer. ASAP has partner programs with University’s to make sure there are reserved spots for ASAP students. These include Barnard, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and John Hopkins.
